Feral Cat

HALL COUNTY FERALS

Volunteers  Needed

We have been working on a program in Hall County at a large community business that after more than 6 months, we have finally got the OK to TNR this property.  This is a landmark event for feral cats and Hall County.  This establishment has been caring and feeding the cats for years either by employees or visitors. Now after attempts to resolve the issue of the feral cats at this establishment and no luck through Trap and Remove, Stop Feeding, and other plans, they have decided on the true solution, TNR.  Now they have come forward, with the help of some great employees of the organization, to get the cats into a Trap / Neuter / Return (TNR) Program. After much discussion, The Backyard Sanctuary is who they chose to contract to help with this project.

The Backyard Sanctuary has already been to property to evalute situation and location and cat habits.  We will work to trap all or most existing cats on the property( Around 20 - 30)  We will house and care for cats until surgery. Then we will house them  2-4 days after surgery to evaluate them and care for them. Then the cats will be released back to the location in which they were trapped. Feeding stations will be built and placed in key locations and educational information will be given to staff and visitors to help them understand the situation and how to help.

As you know , it is always kitten season. Our funding is extremely low. We are not funded by any grants or government agencies, only from the public.

The popularity and need for TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) is increasing every month. A story in the AJC states that the animal controls are under budgeted due to the increased animal intake. A high percentage of the cats euthanized at animal controls are feral. Funding received will go towards our TNR program, which will not only save the lives of cats, but will also decrease the animal intake at the animal controls, and therefore help reduce the budget and tax payer burden.

Funding is needed for spay/neuter cost, vet care, equipment, cleaning supplies, food, and warehouse housing facility for the feral cats.

The Backyard Sanctuary is using warehouse housing from Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen. As of now, Daffy's and The Backyard Sanctuary are both in desperate need of funding to keep their warehouses open. Daffy's and The Backyard Sanctuary are both Programs of SOS Club, Inc. which has been working to help families, their pets, and communities for years.

GOOD NEWS

FORSYTH COUNTY

We have trapped out enough cats as the trapping coordinators that the Corp of Engineers have allowed the trapping to continue at West Bank Park at Lake Lanier.  We are glad that we were able to help achieve this goal.  The outcome should be a great success to feral cat organizations everywhere.  The trapping has been since taken over by volunteers and other organizations to continue their good work at this area.  We have already been contacted by other groups around the lake that need assistance.

The Backyard Sanctuary

is a Program of SOS Club,

 a non-profit tax exempt  501(c)3

organization located in Lawrenceville

Georgia established in 1997.

Backyard Sanctuary was created to help the growing problem

of feral cat overpopulation and to assist those who are trying to fight

this problem on their own.  We want to help coordinate with groups,

vets, rescues, and the county to create a better situation for all those

wanting to help and to assist them with the proper resources they need to

get the job done.

Mission-   Educate the public about the life of a feral cat and the TNR program so

we can save cats while reducing the population and assist those who

are willing to make a difference.

History & Goals - Working with pets, pet assistance, and running a pet food

bank, Daffys Pet Soup Kitchen, we have seen an increasing number of

people trying to care for cat colonies on their own with limited funds for food,

traps, and the cost of spay/neutering.  We are continually organizing education

classes and registering people with us to get them educated and in contact with

groups for food, vet care, and volunteer trappers to help assist each other in mass

trapping to get the whole colony at one time.  With everyone working together, the

TNR Program can be more efficient and will start be accepted by most communities

and Animal Controls.  By registering with our organization and taking our class,

we can get you assistance with your food, trap rental, and vet care at reduced

rates.  Any and all fees collected go straight into the organization to help with our

day to day expenses and our equipment.

In 2009, we assisted with over 2,000 feral cats in providing either food, feeding,

trapping, spay/neutering, and education to over 200 people interested in the feral

cat situation.  We worked hard in 2009 to make a difference.  Through the other

programs SOS Club offers, we are able to assist the people who are caring for the ferals,

and the cats themselves in numerous ways.  This makes us one of the most effective feral cat

assistance and advocacy groups in our area.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

In 2010, we have created a group of strong feral cat advocates and have worked again to help either feed, trap, or spay/neuter over 2500 feral cats in Georgia.  Our education is paying off by people becoming better equiped to take on the feral issues in Georgia. We have been in the media pushing for the rights of feral cats everywhere.  Thankyou for your support.

and make the difference.
